Hello House of Buckle faithful! I hope you are having a great June. Summer is in full swing now! This is great news for you outdoor types. Green grass, colorful flowers, blue sky, warm weather, what’s not to love?! As such, the summer months are the most active for people. With increased outdoor activity come increased injuries as well. As a result, sprains, strains, muscle pulls, and cuts are on the rise during this time. There are many different pain relief options to choose from but the one I want to talk about today is CBD. Whether you currently use CBD or not, chances are you have seen it advertised somewhere as the popularity of this item is skyrocketing across the nation.
What is CBD?
Technically speaking, CBD is Cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent active ingredient of cannabis (Marijuana, Pot, Weed, Dope, Reefer, Hash, Mary Jane, you get the point). As such, it is this reason that CBD is looked at fish-eyed by the uninformed. The natural association with marijuana casts shade on CBD and causes it to be seen as sketchy. But if you know the facts, there is nothing shady about CBD at all. Here is a direct quote from the World Health Organization: “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” So yes, CBD IS a component of marijuana (one of hundreds) but it does NOT cause a “high” on its own. And when I talk about CBD in this blog, I’m referring to CBD that is made from hemp and THC-Free.
You can obtain CBD legally in most areas of the US and all 50 states have laws legalizing it to one degree or another (some restrictions apply in certain states). At the time of this writing the federal government still considers CBD in the same class as marijuana but does not enforce against it. The government’s position is admittedly confusing and is based on where the CBD originates from (does it come from marijuana or from hemp). It appears that the bipartisan consensus in Congress is to make hemp crop legal which would lay most of the confusion and skepticism to rest. Again, I’m referring here to CBD that is made from hemp and does NOT contain THC.
There are a wide range of health benefits that CBD purportedly treats. The list includes but it not limited to:
- Pain relief: This is first and foremost as topically applied CBD is reported to work wonders for pain. The studies have shown that CBD may help reduce pain by impacting the endocannabinoid receptor activity by reducing inflammation while acting with neurotransmitters.
- Anxiety/Depression: Studies have demonstrated that CBD can and does relief anxiety and/or depression in both humans and animals. In one study 24 people with social anxiety were given CBD (600mg) or a placebo prior to a public speaking engagement. The group that received the CBD had significantly less anxiety compared to the placebo group.
- Treatment of epilepsy/seizures: Some of the strongest scientific evidence with numerous studies showing CBD reducing/stopping seizures. In fact the FDA recently approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine, Epidiolex, which contains CBD
There are many other purported health benefits to CBD ranging from diabetes prevention to treating acne, but I am only taking time to list the three above as these seem to have the most research involved.
CBD is generally considered safe, there may be some adverse reactions in some people that include fatigue, diarrhea, or changes in appetite. And like any natural remedy, CBD can interact with different medications so as I recommend with ALL herbs/natural remedies, always consult your physician before taking!
A Word of Caution
I want to also call out the CBD is VERY popular right now and as such, it is starting to pop up in EVERYTHING. I’ve seen CBD infused coffee, CBD infused pet aids, and even CBD infused hamburgers. I believe CBD works and should be considered as part of your natural health care options. However, that doesn’t mean that everything that has CBD in it has efficacy. As an example, the CBD infused hamburger isn’t going to do a thing for you. As a general rule of thumb, if it is topically applied, (pain relief cream, acne cream, skin toner etc.) it will work very well. Taking CBD internally (orally) needs to be looked at case by case. Just be aware that just because something has CBD in it, doesn’t mean the CBD will really do anything for you.
